14 Jesus the Christ: One Person, or Two, or Maybe Three
For almost two thousand years the vast majority of Christians were convinced
that they knew who Jesus was and is. This is Jesus 1, the Jesus of faith.
However, during the past three hundred years, serious doubts have arisen
about the reliability of this knowledge. These doubts have instigated a
quest for the historical Jesus, Jesus 2. This quest has expanded greatly
during the past thirty years so that we now have a plethora of Jesuses. He
does not pretend to know who the "real" Jesus is, but will try to point to
some of the paths which might lead the curious seeker to a better knowledge
of him. John J. Bateman is emeritus professor of Classics and Speech
Communication at the University of Illinois and has also taught at Cornell
University. He has edited and translated for the Complete Works of Erasmus
in English being published by the University of Toronto Press several of
Erasmus' writings on the New Testament. Presenter: John J. Bateman Service

are likely to recall the Disney movie about this legendary woman; now you
can learn about the hidden depths of Mary Poppins, as well as about the
surprising life of her creator, P. L. Travers. The five original books about
Mary Poppins reveal her to be the facilitator of awakening to deeper meaning
in life for children and adults. Travers studied with Irish mystics, Zen
masters, Taoist adepts and famous spiritual teachers of her time. Our
speaker, Rev. Tapscott, minister of the UU Church of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, is
a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, and St. John's College in Santa Fe,
NM. She is an activist focusing on economic justice and environmental
issues. She is currently researching Mary Poppins and her mysterious creator

What Inspires Me?
Our series continues with Carole Bollini,
Craig Fischer, and Glenda Hubbard sharing their
personal experiences of inspiration-- events, or people,
which shaped their attitudes, sparked motivation, or enlightened their
lives in ways which shaped them into the people they are today.
We are announcing a
congregational meeting on Sept 28th, 2008, after the
service, to vote on the by-laws revision, which will be shared as well
before the meeting. Another item on the agenda is a proposal to possibly
change the time of our services on
Sunday mornings from 11:00am to 10:30am. The suggestion surrounds
having better parking availability and refreshments at 11:30 as well. We
will hold a vote on this issue as well. We kindly ask everyone to come to
this meeting to share your thoughts, concerns and opinions. This is your
time to support what you believe and be apart of making the decisions in our
congregation. If anyone has other agenda items to share please email them to
