Today's Program: Homecoming Brunch Presented by Service Leader: Jen Hayward. In keeping with our quarterly program theme of joyous community, we begin our BUUF “school year” with a party, an opportunity to see and visit with old friends and to grow new relationships. Our short service will include a children’s story and a celebration of the members who have joined BUUF in 2017 and 2018. We’ll then segue into a delicious brunch—and if you’d like to make your favorite baked goods or another dish for the brunch, go to our Sign-Up Genius page for the event and tell us what you’ll bring, or email Craig Fischer or Jen Hayward. After the Service at 12:45 p.m.: RE Youth Orientation Meeting Lunch will be served at BUUF from 12:45 p.m.-1:15 p.m.; then parents and kids will join Travis, Tamara and Allison to discuss our youth programs for the coming year and hear what parents and youth envision.
Today's Program: Amidst the Gathering Dark, Paths of Resistance Presented by Sandie Gravett. Service Leader: Kathy Parham Sandie Gravett, Professor of Religious Studies, has taught at Appalachian State for over twenty years. In this presentation, she will focus on the decline of religion in America—why that decline is happening, and what that decline might indicate about building communities, even religiously diverse communities, that can work together on issues of justice and equity. Can such efforts offer hope to people who are increasingly isolated in our culture? As playwright Tony Kushner writes: “The smallest indivisible human unit is two people, not one; one is a fiction. From such nets of souls societies, the social world, human life springs.”
Today's Program: Remembering Juanita Presented by Grace Wakeman and Service Leader Alice Naylor Grace Wakeman will present Remembering Juanita. Juanita Tobin was a member of this fellowship from 1991 until her death in 2007. Alice Naylor brought her into this gathering and Juanita loved to say it was the first church she had ever felt comfortable in. She became a member and contributed her energy and poetry in this sacred space over the last years of her life. Her poetry, her vitality for life, and her courage inspired many people, young and old, throughout her ninety-five years. When asked how she maintained her work ethic, she said, “In the morning when I put on my shoes, I am at work.” After the Service: Serendipity Potluck and River Clean-Up The monthly Serendipity Potluck Lunch will be held in Founders House. Bring a dish to share. Following lunch is the BUUF River Clean-Up. For more information on the Clean-Up, contact Garrett McDowell. Today's Program: The Gift of Storytelling for Building Community Presented by Reverend Brandon Wrencher and Service Leader: Kathy Parham Reverend Brandon Wrencher is a BUUF friend who previously served as the Executive Director of Blackburn Community Outreach and the pastor of Blackburn’s Chapel UMC in Todd. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Justice and Reconciliation Team in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. In this presentation, Rev. Wrencher will talk about the importance of storytelling and shared myths as he works to build a church from the ground up in Greensboro.
Today's Program: The Mandela Fellows Presented by Connie Green The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. In 2018, the Fellowship is providing outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home. The cohort of Fellows studying at Appalachian State this summer represent a variety of careers: agriculture and food security, community development, disability advocacy, education, girls’ and women’s empowerment, law, non-profit management, and youth advocacy. Several speakers from the App State cohort will share their Ignite Talks, that explain and advocate for the work they are doing in their countries. After the Service: A brief congregational meeting will be held to consider and vote on the procedure for facility improvements related to the capital campaign. |
