Special Events

BUUF holds numerous special events during the year to celebrate annual traditions, rites of passage, and provide opportunities for BUUF members and friends of all ages to enjoy the day together. Here are some of of these great events. Find more on our Social Gatherings page.
Earth Day Sunday Service Presentation (April)
Each year on Earth Day, we celebrate UU's 7th principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. The children typically take part in a performance of some sort, often based upon indigenous folk tales that espouse care for our environment. Other times, we present on topics such as endangered animals or climate change.

Child Naming/Dedication Ceremony (May)
This sweet and endearing event officially welcomes families into the Fellowship. During the event, children and their parents accept the BUUF community's love and support by "naming" their child (giving their child's name) and accepting a flower as a token of BUUF's committment to families.
End of Summer Water Communion (September)
In this annual service, everyone is invited to pour water into a bowl to represent a place they spent time this summer and share what they want to bring back from that place to our community. This gathering of water symbolizes how we as individuals blend into a community.

Day of the Dead (October)
In Hispanic cultures in Mexico, Central American and others people celebrate their ancestors who have died and celebrates the life of their loved ones by make gifts and their favorite foods. This is called "Dio De Los Muertos" or Day of the Dead. They visit their graves and set up alters in their homes to honor these people.

BUUF celebrates the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican Holiday, to honor our loved ones who have passed. After our service we love to get festive with a tortilla lunch, potluck style. Many families bring beans, meat, tortillas, chips, salsas of all flavors, guacamole, mole sauce and much more. And there's face painting!
Thanksgiving (November)
At the end of November, we gather to share in thanksgiving a BUUF fellowship wide meal on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It is an all ages celebration!

Winter Holiday Traditions (December-January)
In December we celebrate the Holiday season with a Pageant telling the magical stories of The Three Miracle Births.

Nifty Gifty, a holiday gift-making bazaar, is held on a Saturday morning in mid-late December to bring local children from Hospitality House to craft hand-made gifts and eat breakfast. Our YoUUth often man the crafting tables and BUUF children participate, too.

In January, the annual Three Kings Day celebration commemorates the arrival of the three wise men who came bearing gifts for baby Jesus. It's fun for the whole family with a special Three Kings presentation, crafts, games, food, and gifts for children. This event has been made possible by High Country United Church of Christ and Boone Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, as well as other members from our community.
Game Nights (Throughout the Year)
We often get together on a weekend evening just for playing games in this intergenerational tradition at BUUF. Sometimes the events correspond with a holiday like St. Patrick's Day, sometimes not, and we usually have a potluck before the game playing commences. All are welcome!
