Travis Boswell Joins BUUF As Our New Youth Leader

8/16/2018

WELCOME TRAVIS!
Please join us in welcoming Travis as our new youth leader. Beginning in August, BUUF and  we will host a group for ages 12+. Tamara Franks, minister of High Country UCC, worked throughout last year’s OWL program with Travis and noticed how much the youth responded to him. Full of fun and excitement for living, Travis is ready to take our youth program and infuse it with community engagement, fun group bonding, exploring personal values and creating room to learn and grow. Travis will be leading youth from both congregations on Sunday afternoons and once a month or so working with the youth to plan a social, volunteer or learning based outing. For more information, feel free to email him at traviswayneboswell@gmail.com. Meet Travis at the upcoming Youth Orientation Meeting – on Sunday, August 19th – 12:45pm-2:30pm. Learn more.

BUUF Fundraiser - Appalachian Kitchen CookBook by Earl LeClaire

8/16/2018

Illustrous chef and BUUF member Earl LeCalire has compiled an incredible cookbook of 214 pages filled with traditional (and some quite humorous) recipes typical to the traditional Appalachian region. Many vegetarian (or contain vegetarian variations) recipes are included.  Mountain lore, photographs, stories, poems, and information on cooking and food safety make this a truly colorful read. Purchase one and all proceeds go to support the BUUF Fellowship. Suggested donation: $25.00. See Earl LeClaire, Alice Naylor, or Tyler Foley to purchase, or contact the Fellowship Administrator for more information.

Sunday Service Notes - Amidst the Gathering Dark, Paths of Resistance By Sandi Gravett - August 5, 2018

8/16/2018

Gravett, Professor of Religious Studies, has taught at Appalachian State for over twenty years. In this presentation, she focused on the decline of religion in America—why that decline is happening, and what that decline might indicate about building communities, even religiously diverse communities, that can work together on issues of justice and equity. Can such efforts offer hope to people who are increasingly isolated in our culture? As playwright Tony Kushner writes: “The smallest indivisible human unit is two people, not one; one is a fiction.  From such nets of souls societies, the social world, human life springs.”
