Social Action Comm Meeting - Sunday, November 3 After Service

10/21/2019

On Sunday, November 3, immediately after the service and before Serendipity lunch, the Social Action Committee will have a meeting, and all are invited. We will revisit the question posed at the last meeting—“What new social action activities would help us further translate our covenant into action?”—and Rebecca Moore, as the new committee chair, will discuss coordinating quarterly service projects with our Program Committee themes. Join us! Or if you can’t make the 11/3 meeting, contact Craig Fischer (craig_fschr@yahoo.com) and let him know you’re interested.

Gray Cohen
Hayden Slentz-Kesler and three UU Friends, Gray Cohen, Allison Bishop, and Will Connor, all presented their views and experiences related to UU Principle #4: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

From the service program:

A Free and Responsible Search
The Unitarian-Universalist 4th principle is "A free and responsible search for truth and meaning." It's a wonderful idea, but what does it mean? Hayden and some of his friends will present a bit about how we UU came to affirm that particular principle, and what it means in their lives today.

New Stone Circle Graces the Entrance to the Sanctuary - October 12, 2019

10/13/2019

Tyler Foley announced during the October 13th's Sunday Service that a stone circle was built outside of the Sanctuary's entrance during yesterday's Annual Work Day to bring contemplation to our landscape. In the middle of the circle is an alter facing the southwest, to symbolize the renewal and new life. Read Tyler's statement below regarding the full meaning and purpose of the circle.

Stone Circle and BUUF - by Tyler Foley

What is it? Well, that is obvious and not so obvious. The obvious is that it is a set of eight standing stones in a circle - something that should never naturally be formed in nature.

The not so obvious, is the pure intentionality of bringing spirit into physical being. There are eight nodes, each aligned with the cardinal directions and with the cross quarters. Each of the cardinal directions follow the masculine Sun, and on the calendar as the celebrations follow the solstices and equinoxes. Each of the cross quarters follow the more femininely crosses on the calendar, the in between time that makes life actual livable. And each cross has a massive celebration of its own … Samhain, Imbolc, Betaine, and Lughnassah.

The temple in the center of the circle has its own meaning and intention. It is a place where spirituality hits reality, and is the doorway to the spirit. It is the focus of the intent of whatever purpose there is upon us in the moment that we come to the alter.

When I built the circle, I did so with intent of building a sacred space within this sanctuary known as BUUF. I asked the opinion of an innocent when placing each stone, which stone feel more like this quality or that quality. And he chose and I built. I left in the end one node open when building the alter, and I faced the temple opening towards that node - of the south west. In the Celtic tradition that is the seat and house of Anu, goddess of fertility and re-birth and mother energy. I felt that we as a group need that energy in our lives and congregation the most. I closed the circle and invoked her blessing as I set her node in the circle, directly facing the portal created by the temple.

I have taken this particular small piece of ground as my own charge and I will upkeep it through time. I invite any of you reading this to take a piece of this place and bring your own spirituality into it. I also welcome the use of the circle as a focus point for your own. Feel free to use it, or leave offering, or touch through it, in your own way, through the veil and to the divine spirit.

Sunday Service Notes - Claiming Place and Claiming Space: a Perspective from the Indigenous People’s Movement - October 13, 2019

10/13/2019

From the Program: Crystal Cavalier, a member of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, is an active member of the Indigenous People’s Movement in the Americas engaging in broader discussions and activities as well as being a strong voice in North Carolina. She is a keen advocate for indigenous communities and will share her perspective on historical ties as well as current and crucial issues in our region and country, including her work around Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women’s March. Her service will celebrate the women who have carried us, and those who will continue to carry and guide us, while also honoring those who have been taken.

Support the Notes from the Service:
  • Crystal and her husband, Jason Crazy Bear Keck, presented a traditional introduction, discussed the oppression and trafficking of humans, particularly indigenous women and children in NC, talked about their participation in the spring Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women’s March and issues related to pipeline construction, and offered opportunities to help with these important causes, among other topics. They finished with a traditional song then questions and answers which included a discussion regarding tri-racial experiences.
  • for indigenous communities, specifically, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.  Across the country, and in the Piedmont of North Carolina, we can see evidence of explicit attempts to take and control both land and people and there is a growing need to stand up for our neighbors and the land that sustains all of us. Crystal emphasizes that the construction man camps that the pipelines bring into the affected communities has a link between missing murdered and indigenous women. These camps are everywhere around where oil or coal or mines. Also a draw for drugs and human trafficking. The cause for this is the camps of thousands of male workers who have come to their territory to profit from the pipelines, settling into what are commonly called “man camps”, and more than doubling the population with an influx of workers not from the community.  Women are the creators of life. We carry that water that creates life just as Mother Earth carries the water that maintains our life. So I’m happy to see our people standing here but remind you that when you stand for one, you must stand for the other.\
  • Opportunities for Extension and Service:
    • Crystal extended an invite to tomorrow (Oct. 14th) Indigenous People's Day 2019 in Burlington, and suggested that there may be similar event closer nearby.
    • Read more about Indigenous Peoples' Day as a replacement for Columbus Day from Smithsonian
    • Visit and get involved in the 24th Annual American Indian Heritage Celebration held this year on Saturday, November 23, 2019 from 11am-4pm at the North Carolina Museum of History.
